Get Ready for Some Reggae

Reggae fans are in for a real treat on Saturday night as the area’s own Dub City Renegades play Jammin’ Java at 10:30 p.m. The Dub City Renegades formed back in 2008 from humble beginnings in the local Fairfax area. Over the last six years it has evolved into one of the premiere reggae bands in the DC area, playing for the love of music. thumb_120817110806 The eight-piece band is comprised of lead singer Akshan, Zach Dickie on drums, Andrew Myers or “Dr Dub” on keys, Nick Young holding down the bass, Mista Mensah on percussion, Evan Herring on sax, Mark Allred on trumpet, and newly added Jordan Hoyt on guitar. “Fans and newcomers to the DCR vibe can expect to see a band that loves to play music for the fun of it,” Myers says. “We always bring our high energy vibe to the stage led by our lead singer, Akshan.” The band’s unique sound brings influences of reggae, rock, dub, and roots music that it calls, “Island Rock.” That also happens to be the name of the Dub City Renegades’ debut recording, which will come out in November, but all those who come to Jammin’ Java will receive a free demo of the album. “Island Rock” was mastered at Lion and Fox Recording Studio in College Park, Md. “The reggae scene in the DC area is fantastic,” Myers says. “There are some legendary reggae artists, bands, producers, and studios right here in out back yard.” thumb_120818120816 Even with the thriving reggae scene, the Dub City Renegades have started to make a name for themselves outside of the area and have big plans for its future. “The goals of Dub City is to keep pressing forward making quality music and having fun with our family, friends, and fans,” Myers says. “We are constantly coming up with new music and would like to be on our third of fourth album five years from now.” Those who have seen them live know that the band creates an inviting vibe and the fun never stops. For those heading to Jammin’ Java, Dr. Dub has a final message: “Live life to the fullest and don’t be afraid to lose yourself in the music,” Myers says. “Come out this weekend to catch some reggae vibes with us and our talented brothers, Session Rockers, from the Hampton, Virginia area.”
