Varekai Offers Cirque Du Soleil Magic

Talk to anyone who’s ever seen a Cirque Du Soleil show and one thing they almost all agree on is what you see is like nothing you’ve ever experienced before.

That is definitely the case with Varekai, a thrilling, acrobatic and fun family friendly show that is playing at the Eagle Bank Arena (formerly the Patriot Center) from now until July 26.

Varekai’s story begins with the myth of Icarus, who legend has it created wings for himself that caught fire when he flew too close to the sun. As Icarus tumbles to the ground, the world of Varekai begins. Icarus is hoisted into the air wrapped in a net by his new forest friends who found him after his fall and the adventure begins.

Parachuted into the shadows of a magical forest, a kaleidoscopic world populated by fantastical creatures, this young man sets off on an adventure both absurd and extraordinary. On this day at the edge of time, in this place of all possibilities, begins an inspired incantation to life rediscovered.

The show is full of acrobatic feats and a sense of wonder, with lots of imaginative vignettes moving the show along.

There’s clowns Steven Bishop and Emily Carragher, who provide plenty of laughs with a magic routine and some playful horsing around on stage; the graceful dance of Raphael Botelho Nepomuceno on crutches; the skillful talent of juggler Vladimir Pestov; and an extraordinary baton-twirling routine by performer Arisa Tanaka, who twirls using her elbows, neck and shoulder blades, rather than her hands.
