Cabin Fever Diversions

Cabin Fever Diversions

With the cold winter months in full force, it can be difficult to get the whole family out of the house for some fun. The usual outdoor haunts seem unappealing, but staying in all the time can make everyone a little restless. Here are some great ideas for activities you can do, even when there’s snow on the ground, to bring a little warmth to your loved ones.

Alamo Drafthouse Cinema

Alamo Drafthouse Cinema is a great way to watch your favorite movies in style, with large screens and an award winning menu. The theater
believes strongly in its “rules for watching movies” policy, so there is no talking, texting, or cellphone use allowed. This is to guarantee
the perfect film experience for those who want to have a movie  environment free from interruptions. You can also reserve your favorite seats online in advance, to ensure you get your ideal viewing angle. The menu features brunch items for shows starting before 2pm, as well as pizza, salads, burgers, sandwiches, and entrees. Alamo Drafthouse Cinema also boasts beer, wine, and a complete selection of liquor to accompany your movie. Of particular interest are the “Adult Shakes”—delicious boozy concoctions sure to please the palate. General admission to the cinema starts at $12 a ticket for all shows after 4pm.

iFly

Have you ever wanted to go skydiving without any of the fear or risk associated with jumping out of an airplane? iFly is the place you’ve always dreamed of. “Bodyflight” is a new sport that has arisen from the newfound availability of wind tunnels. At iFly, the experience of skydiving is simulated by floating in a contained wind tunnel that gives you a consistent flight experience. First time flyers will be accompanied by a trained flight instructor who will guide you through the entire experience. The whole affair lasts around an hour and forty-five minutes, which covers your check in time, training session, flight, and a debrief afterwards. iFly is great for kids and adults alike, as anyone over the age of 3 is welcome to take part. There is even a flight viewing deck available so that family can watch the participant during their flight session. As your skills progress, you can sign up for coaching from their team of dedicated instructors who will design a training program to help you hone your abilities. The flight experience starts at $79.95 for 2 flights per person for a first time flyer, which includes all the equipment rental—flight suit, goggles, and helmet.

Escape The Room

Escape the Room is the perfect indoor activity for the puzzle enthusiast this winter. Escape the Room has a dedicated team of puzzle builders who have crafted four different rooms for you and a team to escape from, using your wits and puzzle-solving skills. Each team has sixty minutes to find their way out of a locked room, with various puzzles all revolving around a unique storyline. The Supervillain room lets you become a superhero for an hour and break into the lairs of four different supervillains to save the city from destruction. Mindtrap has a story evocative of Silence of the Lambs, where you must escape your imprisonment by a cannibalistic doctor before dinner time. The spooky Cursed Crypt asks you to solve the mystery of your surroundings and escape the crypt before ill befalls you. Dreamscape, the most difficult puzzle, has you race against the clock to recover a stolen technology that allows people to enter the dreams of others. Public games, which run Thursday and Friday nights, and all day Saturday and Sunday, are $28 a person, and reservations for a timeslot for you and your group can be made online.
