Change has indeed come to the north side of Leesburg Pike along Westpark and Greensboro drives in Tysons since the arrival of the Silver Line in 2014.
Once dominated by office structures and the landmark West Park Hotel—which has been demolished and serves as a parking area while awaiting redevelopment—the area is quickly becoming a strong example of transit-oriented development.
The centerpiece is The Boro, billed “as a place for everything” with an emphasis on being neighborly in its “walkable downtown experiences.”
Within easy walking distance to the Greensboro Metro station, it includes condos at Verse, and apartments at Rise and Bolden, both offering spectacular views. The apartment buildings are 32 stories and 13 stories tall, while the condo building is 25 stories. There are office structures, shopping, restaurants, a theatre called ShowPlace and outdoor entertainment areas that attract crowds. And, there’s a Whole Foods Market. Not far away are Tysons Corner Center and Tysons Galleria.
Now, The Boro is expanding to the west side of Westpark Drive and taking over the old site of the headquarters of National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA). Now only remnants remain of the old mid-century modern NADA building that once dominated the skyline of this part of Tysons. NADA long ago moved to the newer office building along Leesburg Pike at Westpark Drive.
The Meridian Group, developers of The Boro, plan to build more mixed-use properties, including residential units, a continuing care facility and ground floor retail spaces. The new development would also include a public park.
Elizabeth Baker, a land use planner with Walsh Colucci recently told Tysons Reporter, “The vision is to extend The Boro development across Westpark Drive to continue the transformation of Tysons from a suburban office park to an urban center.”
The Boro, like other new and proposed projects near the Silver Line stations in Tysons, fulfills the goals of those who long advocated for rail service to Tysons. Those goals included consolidation of adjacent properties to encourage coordinated redevelopments and expanding the number of residential units available close to jobs.
