Work underway at Dulles International Airport will give the future Metro station at Dulles Airport a shape that mimics the airport’s main terminal.
The windscreen will not only protect future rail passengers from winds, it will create a dramatic vista, matching the iconic Eero Saarinen-designed airport terminal that the station faces across Saarinen Circle, also known as the parking bowl. The station is located adjacent to daily parking garage.
The windscreen is being erected by W.M. Schlosser, the contractor who has recently completed 20 columns that will support giant glass wall on the station’s south side facing the terminal and louvers on the north side.
Later this spring, crews will begin erecting the screen. Installing the glass is a very complex process and some lane modifications will cause some lane closures, according to rail project officials.
Stephen Barna, who oversees the windscreen installation for the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, the entity building the Silver Line, said there is lot of preparation work still to be done before the glass goes up. He said the contractor hopes that work can begin in May. Much depends on weather and virus protection limitations.
